Couples Therapy

Find a way to talk, listen, and reconnect

Relationships can become strained even when both people care deeply about each other. A conversation that starts with a small frustration may turn into the same familiar argument. One person may push for a resolution while the other withdraws. Over time, it can become harder to feel understood, appreciated, or close.

At Healing Hearts and Loving Minds Psychotherapy, we offer couples therapy in Coquitlam, BC, for partners who want to understand what is happening between them and find a more constructive way forward. You do not need to wait until your relationship reaches a breaking point to ask for support.

What can Couples Therapy help with?

Couples therapy offers space to slow down and examine patterns that can be difficult to see when you are caught in them. Couples seek support for many reasons, including:

  • Frequent arguments or conversations that go in circles

  • Feeling distant, lonely, or disconnected

  • Difficulty expressing needs or listening without becoming defensive

  • Trust concerns or the impact of a past hurt

  • Differences around parenting, family, finances, or priorities

  • Stress during major life changes

  • Uncertainty about the future of the relationship

  • Affair recovery

Some couples come in with a clear concern. Others simply know that things have felt difficult for a while. Both are valid places to begin.

What happens in Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy is a place to understand each partner’s experience and the interactions between you. Your therapist will help you explore:

  • What tends to happen during difficult moments

  • What gets in the way of feeling heard

  • What each of you may be trying to communicate

  • What each person is feeling - both the Anger at the surface, as well as the Underlying emotional experiences such as

    • Feeling rejected

    • Feeling ‘not enough’

    • Being scared for the future of the relationship

    • Being scared to trust

The work may involve developing and implementing new communication skills, rebuilding trust, and making room for both partners’ needs.

The goal is to help you build a system of communication and emotional safety and connection so you don’t ever need to come back to therapy.

Therapy is collaborative. You can expect curiosity, care, and a willingness to address difficult topics without reducing either person to “the problem.”

Do we have to be in crisis to start?

No. Couples therapy can be useful when you are dealing with a persistent issue, preparing for a transition, or hoping to strengthen a relationship that matters to you. Seeking support earlier can give you more room to work through concerns before resentment grows. As the saying goes “an Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure”.

Whether you want to feel closer, work through a specific concern, or understand where your relationship stands, we can help you take the next step.
